Equity Programs
Protected- space programming at the Station North Tool Library
Equity programs are classes, spaces, and other opportunities designed to create intentional space for people who are underrepresented in the trades we support: home renovation, construction trades, and maker spaces. We are in the process of building out this program to house protected spaces for varying identities so please stay tuned!
GENDER EQUITY
Our goal is for all our spaces to be welcoming to marginalized people at all times.
While we strive to counteract the impacts of systemic sexism, racism, and heteronormativity at SNTL, we are also working within legacies of exclusion and othering. In response, we offer these more intentional opportunities for people to build community.
These special sections are open to anyone with gender identities that are underrepresented in home renovation, fabrication/construction trades, and makerspaces:
trans people
nonbinary and gender nonconforming people
women
Gender Equity Classes
These protected-space classes cover the fundamentals of using power tools that are accessible through the Lending Library as well as during Open Shop. Classes are offered at sliding-scale cost to students in the hopes that we can bring down as many barriers to attendance as possible.
Tools & Skills Basics
Learn how to use common power tools and fasteners, with hands-on practice. No prerequisite required!
Shop Safety
Get oriented to our woodshop and unlock more woodworking classes and open shop. No prerequisite required!
Woodworking I
Learn how to use the table saw, jointer, and planer to prepare lumber for projects. Requires taking Shop Safety first.
Make Space:
Dedicated monthly open shop time in two of our spaces (wood shop + craft room) for you to practice, explore, and learn from each other. Use of wood shop requires Shop Safety.
Make Space is the first Friday of every month from 5-8 pm.
We hope to add more identities and programs to our offerings— sign up for emails and keep an eye out!
